Academic Experience: Academic CalendarWhat to Expect?
The first week of classes will be an eventful time as your student makes changes to his or her schedule, learns how to get around, and adjusts to campus life. Instructors will provide a syllabus outlining the requirements for each course on the first day of class, including important exam dates, as well as deadlines for papers and projects. After the first week of classes, your student should have a better understanding of each instructor's expectations for the course and should plan study time accordingly. Registration Deadlines
During the first week of any semester, no permission is needed to add a course, if the course is open. Students can cancel a course anytime during the first two weeks of the semester; however, they should be certain to cancel the course online, and not simply stop attending class. Cancellations after the second week of semester will post a "W" (for withdrawal) on the transcript. Your student should contact a OneStop counselor to discuss the implications of reducing their credit load as it may adversely affect financial aid and/or scholarships. Your student should also speak to their CLA adviser to discuss how a schedule change may affect their academic progress. See more on changing course registration.Exams
While exams are held at various times during the semester, most instructors typically hold a midterm exam around the eighth week and a final exam the last week of the semester. Each course is different and your student is responsible for consulting the course materials provided and understanding when exams are held and assignments are due. Because your student may have multiple exams or projects due at the same time, planning ahead is the key to success.
