Academic Experience: Credit Information

Course load and credit expectations give your student a realistic picture of the work they will need to do to stay on track. The information below will assist you to learn more about credit expectations and course load information, and how the University will help your student make the most of his or her education.

Graduation Guarantee

Most students wish to graduate in four years. The Four Year Graduation Guarantee helps insure that this will happen. Parents can support their student's desire to be a successful full-time student by encouraging them to contact their instructors for help, to utilize the many academic resources available to them, and to build an on-campus support system with their peers. See more information about the guarantee.

The 13-credit policy

In an effort to keep students on track as they progress toward a degree, the U has implemented a policy requiring students to register for a minimum of 13 credits per semester. This is known as the 13-credit policy. In addition to the academic benefits that come from taking a full courseload, students who take more than 13 credits per semester can do so without incurring any additional tuition costs (which provides an important tool for managing educational costs).

We do understand that there may be times when a student cannot or should not take 13 credits in a semester. If you think an exception might be appropriate for your student, please take a look at the 13-credit FAQ for more information.

Average Course Load

Though students only need to meet the 13-credit minimum for any given semester, to graduate in four years they must average 15 credits per semester. Both CLA and the University provide students with many planning tools to help them meet this requirement. In addition, they can obtain schedule planning and other advising support from their CLA adviser and other student community advisers.
