Members of Your Student's Advising Team

The College Adviser

Your student's college adviser is a professional adviser who will be available throughout the undergraduate career in CLA. Students make appointments with their college adviser to discuss any academic decisions or difficulties they face and to understand what requirements they need to complete to graduate.

The college adviser can help students:

  • plan their program to stay on track for timely graduation;
  • connect with University learning opportunities outside of the classroom;
  • explore possible majors;
  • complete senior review of coursework to prepare for graduation;
  • select activities to prepare for life after graduation.

The Peer Adviser

Peer advisers are experienced fellow students who are knowledgeable about CLA and University requirements and resources.

The peer adviser helps students:

  • learn how to use the tools and resources available to plan their program;
  • answer routine questions about their course load and schedule, especially in their first year;
  • learn of opportunities to enrich their academics through study abroad, on-campus jobs, and on-campus activities.

The Major Adviser

Major advisers are the experts on the requirements, courses, activities, and faculty of their major department. Major advisers usually have an office located in your student's major department.

The major adviser helps students:

  • decide if their proposed major is a good choice for them;
  • prepare a Major Program Form to declare the major and map out courses needed to finish it;
  • enrich work in the major through participation in study abroad or student organizations and events in the major department;
  • plan for graduate study and careers related to their major.

The Career and Community Learning Center Liaison

Your student's CCLC liaison is a professional career counselor who will connect your student to the resources available in the Career and Community Learning Center. Through elective courses, workshops, individual appointments, and its extensive resource room, the center can assist undergraduates with major and career selection.

The liaison can help students:

  • locate information and offer resources to assist with deciding on a major;
  • gain relevant experience through internships, campus involvement, and community involvement;
  • locate information on careers of interest;
  • plan next steps after graduation, whether that means entering the job market or applying for graduate or professional degree programs.
